What is an information prescription?
The term 'information prescription‘ (IP) refers to the system and processes used by a healthcare professional to provide tailored, individualised information which is designed to meet the needs of a patient and / or their carers at a given point in the cancer journey. More simply put it indicates the information that a health professional believes would be helpful to that patient at that individual point in time.
Information prescriptions support patients to receive the right information at the right time and provide patients and carers with written information to support their discussions with Healthcare Professionals. An IP is tailored to an individual’s needs allowing them to receive as much or as little information as they want at that point in time.
The national project to implement information prescriptions is currently underway, and the SCN trusts have been involved in both the initial pilot studies for the project and the current wave implementation phase.
