Prostate cancer is common cancer that mostly affects middle aged and elderly men. It is quite rare in the under 50s. The cancer starts in the cells of the prostate gland.
There are different treatments for prostate cancer. When thinking about your treatment, your doctors will take into account the following factors : the size of the cancer, whether there is any spread of disease, how aggressive the cancer might be, your age, general health and your wishes.
Your doctors will tell you about the benefits, risks and side effects of the treatments being offered, and how they may affect your life afterwards. Your type of treatment and place of residence will decide where you go for treatment.
Some cancers grow quickly and cause problems, but prostate cancer usually grows slowly, especially in older patients. It may be a long time before it leads to troublesome symptoms or needs treatment. Some men are never aware that they have prostate cancer.
